Three Types of Water Filtration Systems

There are many reasons why you should install a house water filter in your home. But before you buy one, it’s important to understand exactly what types exist. The following is a brief summary of the major types of household water filters that are available to you.

The two main types of filtration devices are: 1)point-of use and 2)point-of entry. Point-of use filters are generally installed at the point in your house where water enters from outside or in your house. This includes taps, showers and garden hoses.

A point-of entry whole house water filter will usually need to be attached directly to your faucet or shower head. These types of filters can usually get down to about 0.3 microns. Depending on how often you shower, the filter may need to be replaced on a monthly basis or every few months. Or if you do not use a shower, you may not even need to replace the filter on your faucet. However, if you do use a shower, then you should make sure that you have a filter for the main water line to your house.

Point-of use whole house water filters remove chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and lead. The major benefit of these types of filtration is that you will not have to worry about buying chlorine bleach or buying an expensive, in-home water softener. Some of the filters available will actually filter out all of the chemicals and impurities, leaving only natural minerals in your drinking water. Although this might sound great, you should still have your water tested by an independent laboratory to be sure. Chlorine has been linked to various cancers, including bladder and colorectal cancer. Although there are no studies linking chlorine with human cancer, there is a lot of controversy surrounding the chemical.

Point of use water filters can also remove a variety of contaminants including herbicides, pesticides and chlorine resistant cysts. They will typically cost a few hundred dollars, depending on the type of filter you select. On the plus side, you will be eliminating hard water and adding essential minerals like calcium and magnesium to your drinking water. However, if the contaminants are removed too quickly, you will be left with a water softener that is not powerful enough to remove the hardness minerals in your water.

The best house water filtration process sediment pre-filtering. This is where the system cleans the water before it goes through the point of use filtration process. During the point of use filtration process, most of the hard contaminants are removed, as well as the valuable microorganisms that are in your water. If you choose a carbon block or a carbon granular carbon filter, you will be removing these harmful components. If you choose an ion exchange system, you will add sodium and potassium to your drinking water to increase the hardness level.
