With all the recent cases of contaminated drinking water in the news, like Flint, Michigan, and Denmark, South Carolina, ensuring your water is safe for drinking is more important than ever. And, the best way to make sure your drinking water is free of dangerous contaminants, like lead and arsenic, is to invest in a whole house water filter system. Learn why when it comes to controlling your water quality you should be proactive, not reactive and how a whole house water filtration system is the best way to take control of your water quality.
What Happened In Flint, Michigan?
Back in 2014, the residents of Flint, Michigan, were shocked to find out that their water tested positive for dangerous levels of lead, iron and other heavy metals. After a series of incidents, including switching to the Flint River as a water source, it turned out that the state of Michigan wasn’t properly treating Flint’s water. They were found to be in violation of federal law by not adding a necessary anti-corrosive agent during the treatment process.
The mishandling of Flint’s water supply also resulted in low chlorine levels in the water system, which led to an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease between 2014 and 2015 that left 12 people dead and sickened at least 87.
What Happened In Denmark, South Carolina?
For 10 years, residents of this southern town noticed rust-colored water coming from their taps. Many of them reached out to both the local and state government about this issue, but both of these governmental bodies assured the residents of Denmark that there was nothing to be concerned about and that the town’s water was completely safe.
However, after a year long investigation, CNN found that the South Carolina government was actually adding a substance called HaloSan to one of the city’s four wells. HaloSan was being added to the water in an attempt to regulate naturally occurring iron bacteria to help alleviate the red stains the town’s tap water was leaving in people’s homes. However, HaloSan has not been approved for use as a disinfectant for drinking water by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Many Denmark residents believe the use of HaloSan has resulted in their health problems.
