Arsenic in water is all too common these days. And, that is definitely not a good thing. Learn what exactly arsenic is, how it gets into your drinking water, the dangers of arsenic in drinking water and how to treat arsenic in water.

What is Arsenic?

Arsenic is an element that occurs naturally in the Earth’s crust. But, it makes its way into rocks, soil, water, air, plants and even animals. Arsenic can also be released into the environment through industrial activities, like agricultural work and mining. And, arsenic is actually commonly used in the following:

  • Paints
  • Dyes
  • Metals
  • Drugs
  • Soaps

Prevalence of Arsenic in Drinking Water

Arsenic is actually pretty commonly found in water, especially ground water. According to the EPA, “Higher levels of arsenic tend to be found more in ground water sources than in surface water sources (i.e., lakes and rivers) of drinking water.”

In 2000, the EPA estimated that nearly 36 million Americans were drinking water that contained arsenic at or above 3 parts per billion.

The EPA’s Arsenic Rule

In 2001, the EPA lowered the allowable limit of arsenic in drinking water from 50 ppb to 10 ppb, and that’s where it remains today.

However, there are other agencies that disagree with this ruling and believe that due to the dangers of arsenic in drinking water, the maximum limit needs to be even lower. The Natural Resources Defense Council, for instance, thinks the standard should be lowered from 10 ppb to 3 ppb. And, California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment believes the level should be 4 ppb.

What Are the Dangers of Arsenic in Water?

A New York Times article revealed that “a number of studies suggest that arsenic is an astonishingly versatile poison, able to do damage even at low doses.” The article also went on to say that chronic low-dose exposure to arsenic has been linked to a ton of health problems in both children and adults, including:
