The Multiple Health Risks of Chloramine to Municipal Water Consumers

What do concerned citizens in the San Francisco Bay Area and consumer advocate Erin Brockovich have in common?
They’re both extremely alarmed about the widespread and unregulated use of chloramine in municipal water supplies throughout the United States. Years ago, cities started adding chlorine to their municipal water supplies in order to kill bacteria and other contaminants. However, as these contaminants mutated and became stronger, cities weren’t allowed to increase the levels of chlorine in water, so they started using chloramine instead—without fully taking into account the many risks it poses to people and their homes. The citizens of the San Francisco Bay Area were so upset that they formed the non-profit organization “Citizens Concerned About Chloramine (CCAC),” which provides one of the most comprehensive collections of data relating to the many risks chloramine poses to human health, as well as the environment.
Erin Brockovich is a well-known consumer advocate who, as a young legal researcher, discovered that the Pacific Gas and Electric Company had knowingly exposed the residents of Hinkley to contaminated groundwater, causing a range of serious—and lethal—health problems. Thanks to her perseverance and outstanding research, PG&E was eventually ordered to pay $333 million in damages to the 634 plaintiffs.
Clearly, Brokovitch is not easily intimidated when the public’s health is on the line—and when she strongly believes something is wrong, she speaks out. That’s why it’s so significant that in 2010, she wrote a paper titled “Protection or Poison? The Chloramination of Drinking Water.” And in this paper, she clearly states: “The fact of the matter is chloramines are a terrible mistake.”
What exactly is chloramine, and what are the dangers it poses?
Chloramine is the chemical product of chlorine combined with ammonia. It doesn’t dissipate or evaporate quickly like simple chlorine, so it serves as an affordable yet long-lasting solution for disinfecting municipal water supplies.
However, evidence is mounting about the many health risks chloramine poses to consumers of municipal water—something that shouldn’t be surprising when you know that ammonia forms a large part of the compound. According to Citizens Concerned About Chloramine (CCAC), chloramine can have a negative impact on the:
- Immune system
- Respiratory system
- Digestive tract
And if that weren’t enough, chloramine also wreaks havoc on homes. Due to its powerful corrosive abilities, it can cause lead to leach from pipes, which—besides putting families at risk of lead poisoning—can lead to leaks, water damage, and mold growth. It’s also bad for the environment—so bad, in fact that the Canadian EPA has determined it to be toxic when it enters the environment in high volumes due to water discharges.
Why you need chloramine filtration
In the U.S., however, municipalities are free to choose if they use chloramine, when they use it, and how much. So short of testing your water every day, you have no way of knowing how much of this toxic chemical is in your water.
For decades, there have been no solutions on the market to safely, effectively, and affordably remove chloramine from household water. That’s why WAVE Home Solutions developed the CitySupreme Chloramine + Chlorine Purification System. This whole-home system offers families the highest possible reduction of chlorine, chloramine, chemicals, toxins, iron, and sediment so their water is safe to use. Moreover, it’s a no-service solution with a regenerative media tank that only needs the addition of a simple regeneration package and a backwash for 30 minutes once every three to four months. In other words, getting healthy water for your children, your partner, yourself, and your pets has never been easier!
There are no other solutions available today that compare to the CitySupreme carbon-media water filtration solution. Fill out our form to find out how you can protect your family’s health and save your home today!
